A BENEFICIARY of the Technology Business Incubation (TBI) in Leyte harvested at least 1,848 kilos of milkfish grown in fish cages after a five-month culture period.

Sharon Jacaban, an incubatee in Barugo, Leyte, also harvested 522 kilos of milkfish three months ago.

The TBI program on milkfish production is being implemented by the Department of Agriculture-National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (DANFRDI).

It aims to determine the partial production and survival rate, and estimate the investment return on milkfish farming in ponds and cages.

Milkfish is a top culture commodity and has since been cultivated in many areas across the country, including Eastern Visayas (Region 8).

However, seed and marketable fish supply have become limited, especially during the pandemic.

Through the TBI program, pond operators and fish growers are being capacitated providing them agricultural inputs including fry supply, commercial feeds, pond fertilizers and chemicals.

“As such, the incubatees can become more self-sustaining in their next production, and the milkfish supply in the locality can be augmented,” the DA-NFRDI said.

The TBI project is implemented in collaboration with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region 8.
