Zamboanga: ‘The Menace’ is coming back

- NIEL VICTOR C. MASOY

“THE MENACE” is coming back.

This was the bold statement of Filipino fighter Denice Zamboanga as she returns to action in ONE Fight Night 5 on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena, where she clashes with Chinese Lin Heqin.

Coming off two straight losses to just one fighter in South Korean Ham Seo Hee, Zamboanga, carrying a pro record of eight wins and two losses, is eager to win this time to give the home fans a treat and become the no. 1 contender in the women’s atomweight division anew.

“I’ll make sure your tickets are worth it for this fight night,” Zamboanga said in the pre-fight press conference at Solaire Resort and Casino on Wednesday evening.

“This is a very important fight for me because I just came from a loss and this fight, I want to make sure to get back to rank No. 1 and fight for the title,” added the 25-year-old, who’s currently at the third spot.

Zamboanga’s shot to fight for the atomweight title got derailed.

The pride of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines was already primed to fight champion Angela Lee but it didn’t push through due to the latter’s pregnancy.

She had to settle for fighting Ham in the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Grand Prix but lost in the controversial fight. Zamboanga battled Ham in a rematch but lost anew, this time in a convincing fashion.

That said, Zamboanga looks to get a breakthrough this time and put an end to her losing skid as she fights in front of the Filipino home fans for the first time.
