BICAR: I’M ALWAYS READY

-

ALINA Bicar might be one of the most soft-spoken players in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference, but she’s certainly one of the better setters in the league.

On Thursday, February 16, the 5-foot5 Bicar showed her mettle anew as she dished out 20 excellents to orchestrate Chery Tiggo’s 25-19, 25-14, 25-16 victory over F2 Logistics.

The victory catapulted the Crossovers to a 3-0 start in the ongoing conference.

Bicar, a standout from the University of Santo Tomas, said she’s just simply ready to perform whenever Chery Tiggo head coach Aaron Velez fields her in the court.

“My mindset is that every time coach fields me, I want to perform [well]. I want to help my team any time they need me. I am always ready,” Bicar said in Filipino.

“We (me and Jasmine Nabor) always look out for each other. Whoever has a good game, we support and help each other. I won’t be able to do it without my teammates. We set the plays but our teammates are the ones who score. I and Jas are so grateful for their trust.”

The 25-year-old Bicar is the second leading setter in this conference with an average by set of 4.70 behind Creamline star Jia de Guzman’s 8.56.

Bicar’s playmaking is certainly not lost on Velez as well as Crossovers team captain and scorer Mylene Paat.

“Alina is showing a lot of heart. I can see the aggressiveness. She isn’t really talkative and expressive. You can just count the words that she says. She’s very precious. Once Alina gets focused, everything gets going. You can really see her love for the sport,” said Velez.

Paat said that she might be Chery Tiggo’s captain but it is Bicar who actually makes things for the Crossovers.

“She’s like the captain of the ship. I am the captain of this team but she is the captain of the game. Alina is a short setter but once she enters the court, she stands tall. She can block. Earlier in the game, she had a single block,” she added.

Riding on a 3-0 start, Bicar said that the Crossovers can’t be complacent and they have to continue to stick together.

“We just stick to what we’re doing. We’re not being complacent. We thank God for the win. We helped each other and enjoyed the game. We just have to stick together and keep our fighting spirit,” she said.
