BAGUIO URGES ‘DESTIGMATIZING,’ RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

BAGUIO CITY: “It’s about time that we address mental health using a holistic approach. Aside from merely treating its symptoms and preventing suicide as isolated issues, we have to consider people’s overall well-being by promoting mental, emotional, physical, and social health, ”Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan said in Monday’s flag-raising rites at City Hall where he pointed out that mental health is not just an individual concern but a societal issue. He said that efforts must be doubled in raising awareness and educating people about mental health where one crucial step in the city’s information and education campaign is to “destigmatize” mental health which would create a more inclusive and supportive society since stigma prevents people from seeking treatment and also fosters discrimination. As a local legislative action to address this increase in the number of individuals who experience mental health problems, Olowan disclosed that the city council has enacted an ordinance putting into place a city-wide mental health program which he hopes will be fully implemented soon. “By prioritizing mental health, we build a stronger and more emphatic community. Let us do our best in creating a society where individuals can reach their full potential and where dreams are not shattered by the weight of invisible burdens. We cannot allow mental health to remain in the shadows any longer. It is our moral obligation to champion this cause, to advocate for those who feel voiceless, and to ensure that the light of compassion reaches every corner of our community,” he said. “Open discussion about mental health must be encouraged to create a safe space for people to share their experiences without fear of judgment and the government must ensure access to affordable and quality mental health care services,” Olowan added. “Let me emphasize once again that we must break the stigma surrounding mental health and promote an environment where people feel safe and are encouraged to seek help. Let us extend a helping hand rather than turn a blind eye. In doing so, we not only help individuals in need but we also help in strengthening the fabric of our society,” he said.
