PH’s premier geographic competition back after 4 years
THE 13th Philippine Geography Olympiad (PGO 13) is finally returning to its first face-to-face competition in four years at the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman on March 2 to 3, 2024.
Up to 120 participants in 33 high schools in the Philippines will compete this year, making PGO 13 its largest non-online edition in almost nine years.
Its main events will happen at the University of the Philippines Integrated School and UP School of Statistics. Students will test their knowledge of geography in various quizzes and board competitions, both individually and in teams.
The field exam will also be making a return this year, with participants applying their geographic knowledge and skills in various areas and buildings around the UP campus.
An essay-type final exam similar to the International Geography Olympiad will be introduced this year, allowing finalists to engage their critical thinking skills on relevant geographic issues.
Finally, various Teacher’s Talks will be held throughout the competition, wherein educators and geography professionals across the country will discuss the applications of geography in high school education and careers in the Philippines.
The Geographic Society of the University of the Philippines, which organizes the competition, is particularly motivated to organize PGO 13, especially after successfully sending two high school participants to the 19th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) in Bandung, Indonesia.
The top four winners of PGO 13 will make their way to Dublin, Ireland, to represent the Philippines in the 20th iGeo on August 19 to 24.
