Influencers for a safer internet
IN a bid to safeguard children from the perils of online abuse and exploitation, a group of social media influencers has taken up the mantle of Creators #ForEveryChild. Unicef Philippines has honored these digital advocates with the first-ever annual recognition badge for their commitment to leveraging their platforms to defend children’s rights.
The Creators #ForEveryChild, including notable names such as AJ Bacar, Anina Rubio, and Ginger Arboleda, were lauded during the Safer Internet Convention on Digital Responsibility. Their efforts have been instrumental in combating online sexual abuse and exploitation, shedding light on the prevalence of abusive materials targeting vulnerable children.
With a significant portion of Filipino youth turning to social media influencers for information and inspiration, the role of these digital advocates in raising awareness and promoting responsible online behavior is paramount. This year’s convention emphasized the urgency of implementing laws such as Republic Act 11930, aimed at fortifying protections against online predators and enhancing the reporting mechanisms for victims. According to a Unicef-EcpatInterpol Disrupting Harm study, a distressing 20 percent of children aged 12 to 17 reported being victims of online abuse in 2021, yet disclosure rates remain disproportionately low due to stigma and lack of awareness about reporting channels. The convention also saw nearly 100 children and youths collaborating on developing a Digital Responsibility Program. This initiative, supported by Unicef and organized by the Positive Youth Development Network, the Department of Education, and local government units, aims to empower learners and educators with the skills needed to navigate online platforms safely.
Unicef Philippines emphasizes the importance of nurturing digital literacy among adults and children to foster a safer online environment. By promoting responsible digital citizenship and collective action, the program aims to maximize the positive potential of the internet while mitigating the risks of online abuse and exploitation.
