Inspiring inclusion and celebrating women’s voices
MARCH ushers in a special celebration of women, highlighting their remarkable history and achievements. On International Women’s Month, we seize this opportunity to extend our accolades for their invaluable global contributions. For International Women’s Day this year, the spotlight is on #InspireInclusion, which encourages recognizing the unique perspectives of women from all backgrounds and promotes inclusivity. Remember that sparking positive shifts isn’t only for women; we’re all integral players in this grand scheme. Here is what we can do: Uncover and elevate women’s stories.
Discover the remarkable stories of women throughout history and those shaping our world today. Their journeys will challenge your thinking and expand your understanding.
Explore channels by women creators across genres like tech, art, gaming, and fitness on YouTube. Their Spotlight Channel is a great place to discover new voices. Curated collections of films and shows highlight women’s perspectives. Look for content tagged “Her Power, Her Voice” and a unique collection featuring Oscar-winning women.
On Google Play, head to the Women’s History Month/International Women’s Day hub for curated apps, games, books, and compelling stories of women in leadership, finance, and gaming. Each year, International Women’s Day gets a unique Google Doodle. This year’s artwork by Sophie Diao honors the strength of women sharing knowledge across generations.
Honor women trailblazers
To embark on a deeper exploration of art by women globally, explore Google Arts & Culture’s virtual exhibition featuring masterpieces from institutions like the National Museum of Women in the Arts and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Then, continue the celebration by rediscovering forgotten female trailblazers, from the scientist who unraveled the DNA code to history’s most successful pirate.
One trailblazer in the Philippines is Connected Women, which empowers Filipina women through technology and remote work. They provide online skills training in AI and other digital fields, helping women build careers and achieve financial independence. Their unwavering commitment to helping underserved communities sets Connected Women apart as a driving force for positive social change. This inclusivity makes them pioneers in women’s social and economic empowerment.
This dedication is reflected in their recent partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Led by CEO Agnes Gervacio, Connected Women signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Makati City. This collaboration will focus on exciting initiatives like online skill development, AI education, cybersecurity, and more — all designed to pave the way for even more women to thrive in the AI sector.
Gervacio highlighted its ambition to equip 300,000 women in underserved areas with AI and machine learning expertise over the next three years. This goal aligns with the DTI’s National AI Strategy Roadmap, and the new partnership aims to reach an impressive 1 million Filipino women.
Support women-led businesses and causes
Numerous Filipina entrepreneurs and advocates are making significant strides in various industries and sectors. Among them, Kristine Reyes-Lopez stands out with her eco-conscious cleaning company, Messy Bessy Cleaners, known for its ethical practices, natural products, and support for young adults from challenging backgrounds.
Similarly, Anya Lim and her daughter Annie lead Anthill Fabric Gallery, a social enterprise that uses traditional fabrics and weaving techniques from indigenous communities to create modern, eye-catching products. Yana Santiago’s company, Olivia & Diego, is another example, offering stylish, eco-friendly bags and accessories while empowering women artisans in rural areas.
For women-led causes, Faye Cura’s Gantala Press is dedicated to promoting feminist literature and marginalized voices in the Philippines. Lynn Pinugu built She Talks Asia to create a powerful platform for women’s voices. Through dynamic gatherings, hands-on sessions, and a media network, they give help and fuel women to take on leadership roles confidently.
Meanwhile, the energetic ground-level entity, Gabriela Women’s Party, fights for women’s rights. Gabriela opposes violence against women, economic disparities, and issues in political representation.
Backing these women-led enterprises is key, but investing in women on a broader scale is vital — it’s simply the right thing to do. This is the message the United Nations emphasizes with their 2024 theme, “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.”
Progress takes ongoing effort
Remember, International Women’s Day goes beyond celebration — it demands action from everyone. It’s a time to dismantle harmful stereotypes, denounce discrimination, and champion inclusivity. Men and allies, your support is vital in driving social, economic, cultural and political progress for women.
