- NIEL VICTOR MASOY

ANGEL Canino did not play for La Salle in the UAAP Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament on Thursday, April 4, at the Mall of Asia Arena due to a right arm injury.

Wearing a sling on her heavily wrapped arm, Canino was on her playing jersey but watched from the bench as De La Salle University outplayed University of the Philippines, 26-24, 25-19, 24-26, 27-25, for its eighth win in nine games.

La Salle assistant coach Noel Orcullo said that the 20-year-old reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player was hurt in an accident, incurring cuts on her right arm. The outside hitter’s playing status for the next few games would be day-to-day.

“She (Canino) got into an accident where she incurred cuts in her arms. We are monitoring her day by day but we don’t know the timetable for her return yet,” said Orcullo, who did not give details about the accident.

Prior to Thursday’s game, the sophomore Canino played 24 straight games, eight of which in the ongoing Season 86 women’s volleyball tournament where she was averaging 16.3 points per match on top of 5.75 excellent receptions and 4.75 digs for the defending champs.

In her absence, Shevana Laput stepped in and scored 21 points as Alleiah Malaluan and Maicah Laroza added 17 and 12 points, respectively, for the Final Fourbound La Salle.

“We told the players that we were a bit used to playing without Angel like in the Shakey’s tournament. Angel wasn’t around but we won the championship. We told them to stay ready with or without Angel,” said Orcullo.

“We’re going for the twice-tobeat [advantage in the semifinals]. We’re going to adjust if Angel is still not available to play the next game.”

The Lady Spikers will face the University of the East Lady Warriors on Tuesday, April 9, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
