Unparalleled and undefeated, the fearless Filipina remains untouchable in the eyes of new breed Mikhail Albano
Mikhail Albano brings traditional fabrics to the 21st century
Many myths and legends have been said about who the Filipina really is, but one thing that stands the test of time is her bravery and beauty. From the vessels of history we have the revolutionary Gabriela Silang, who waged war against colonialists as she set forth on her horse with a sword on her hand; we have Melchora Aquino, hailed as the Mother of the Philippine Revolution for heeding the injured and fallen; and lastly, we have Darna, the fictional heroine created by Mars Ravelo who embodies both the Filipina’s strength and otherworldly allure. These are just few of the icons that the young and old generation has looked up to.
Young designer Mikhail Albano wanted to emulate all of these characteristics—a challenge that he willingly took under his yoke, through his talent and skill. Harnessing his eye for design and pride for the country, Mikhail immersed himself in his passion by journeying to the birthplace of the Renaissance movement, the Opera, and luxury house Versace. For three years, he honed his talent in Instituto Marangoni. “For my graduation collection, I wanted to pay homage to and celebrate our heritage by using Filipino textiles,” says Mikhail. Before his final year, he went back home and collected different fabric samples and textiles he wanted to use. His love for the iconic silhouettes of couturiers Charles
James and Christian Dior, linked with his native land’s artistry paved the way for his collection entitled, Lupa. “I would like to mention Nanay Myrna Pula and the weavers of Lake Sebu who created the t’nalak textiles, which were used in this collection.”
Seamlessly, that is how you champion the blood, sweat, and tears of your countrymen all while aggrandizing innovation. As national hero Jose Rizal once exclaimed in his piece Noli Me Tangere, “(Genius) blossoms everywhere. Genius is like the light, the air. It is the heritage of all.”
