A FEAST OF THE NORTH

Celebrate the biggest crayfish party in Asia for a cause

- By DANIEL REYES

When you think of the Nordic countries, there are two things that come to mind: the war-hungry Vikings and the icy cold temperature of the north. While both ring true, immersing yourself in the history and culture of the Scandinavians will make you realize that there is more than just the fictitious novels depicting the medieval times you’ve read before. Beyond the cold are brave souls who courageously sailed the high seas, truly understanding how to enjoy and savor life. In fact, as you fast forward to the time they finally settled, more traditions were made showcasing the true spirit of the Scandinavians, one of which is the crayfish party.

The Kräftskiva, or in lay-man’s term, the crayfish party, is a traditional festivity symbolizing the end of summer for Nordic countries. From what was only reserved

for the aristocracy back then is now an occasion for all. However, due to a plague in 1907 that nearly wiped out the species, a law was enacted to prohibit the fishing of crayfish year-round, except during the crayfish season—a couple of months starting in August. Hence, this only made the pernickety-but-tasty little creatures the most exclusive and sought-after delicacy of the Norse. While you can of course settle for imported crayfish, they seldomly taste as good as the Swedish crayfish.

The ideal night to celebrate the Kräftskiva is during a warm and tender weather. All you need is your family or group of friends, a heap of freshly boiled crayfish, some beer and schnapps, and a list of drinking songs, because apparently, before you eat the tail of the crayfish, you must sing first.

Bringing this spectacular Nordic tradition to Manila is none other than Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. The fivestar international luxury hotel brand partnered with NordCham Philippines and Philippines Norway Business Council to host the biggest crayfish party in all of Asia at the Harbor Garden Tent.

Take part in a grand celebration set in a Viking-themed coastal village where you can indulge in a bountiful serving of crayfish, recreating the iconic Nordic feast that has been passed from generations after generations. If that’s not enough, you can also enjoy other Nordic cuisines. There’s a home-made gravadlax with honey dill mustard sauce, cod and salmon fillets, and sailor’s stew. In addition, you can also savor the classic Swedish meatballs with gravy or lingonberry jam, as well as a serving of herring and potatoes. And of course, no Nordic party won’t be complete without generous batches of sausages and sauerkraut.

With all the overwhelming amount of sumptuous viands at the buffet, make the most of the festivities by pairing the hearty specialties with a good ol’ free-flowing beer. While you’re at it, dance the night away to an ABBA musical tribute by the Silk Band. DJ Yuki will also continue the celebratory momentum with her playlist of the newest chart-topping tunes to turn up the night.

Glitz and glam of the feast aside, this extravagant party is actually more than just the food. It is also held for the benefit of the Chosen Children Village, a foundation dedicated towards providing a home environment and care facility for physically and mentally-challenged children. Over the last four years, the event has raised 1.4 million pesos, which has been used for the daily operations of the facility and improving the quality of life of the children. Now that’s the true Nordic spirit: where they leave no man behind, for together they will rise stronger.

Reserve your slot now and don your best Viking ensemble as you celebrate the biggest crayfish party in Asia on September 14, 2019. For tickets and inquiries, visit crayfishparty. ph or call +63 966 453 7178.
