CREATE A LEGACY

- @sukisalvador

Four years ago, Sari Yap, founder of One Mega Group said these words in a recorded interview: “Some people might feel sad about it when they realize that their time or their job is done. But with me, I don’t feel that way. It’s because I feel that I have truly done what I was supposed to do which is to make sure that MEGA, my legacy, outlives me. And I think that’s the hallmark of a good founder.”

I found this recording as I was on the treadmill on a very sad day, the day she passed away. I found it so powerful that I put it online to remind people of how truly ahead of her time Sari was, but more importanly, how useful these words were. In a matter of minutes, it became viral because her words are so relatable that it touches on so many imporant life lessons.

First, it touches on endings. So many people are afraid for things to end, whether it is an experience, a vacation, a relationship, a job, loss or death. I used to be, and sometimes still am, one of those people who are afraid of change.

I’m comfortable in my place in this world and it terrifies me when I think about the uknown. But over time and with the help of Paulo Coelho, Shonda Rhimes and now Sari Yap, I’ve become increasingly more open to change. I realized that if you stay in a place longer than you are supposed to, you missed out on lifes’s other potentials and possibilities. Change can provide you a better life. Change isn’t good, change is everything. Be fearless and more flexible with things that aren’t planned for you because the universe is constantly providing you with better options that what you currently have.

Secondly, Sari talks about her legacy, MEGA. She has worked tirelessly for 28 years to build her brand. When we are young, we are taught to be good as a child, to study well in school, and to work hard at our job because it provides us with money. Yes, it is true that we need money because it can afford us the basics of food and shelter, but as people of this generation, we’ve become obsessed with material things. Sure, I love a nice set of clothes, shoes or bags. I also love excess because it gives me peace of mind when I have options. But if I’m being honest, we can survive and be happy with a lot less. Sari’s legacy is MEGA, a fashion brand that has touched so many women, men and members of this multi-million peso industry. On the surface, her produt appears to be fluff, but what it is is the polar opposite. Her brand has given people success, it has provided for families and it has also contributed to the legacy of people that have touched the MEGA brand. This life isn’t about amassing wealth or fame or even experiences, it is about creating that legacy, a contribution to the world that will live way after your time on earth. A legacy is something that won’t fade or disappear, it is a something that can help improve the lives of others, fluff or not. Starting today, don’t just do your job; instead, work on your own version of MEGA. Surely, it will be much more valuable that anything you can afford or already own.

So, have you done what you are supposed to do today? I hope so.
