RETAIL TREND REPORT
Hailing from the Land Down Under, Australian luxury brand Zimmermann makes every woman look divine and ethereal
Fall into grace with Zimmerman’s latest collection
If Australia were a woman, she would be on the golden shores of the land walking barefoot, a martini on her hand and wearing all Zimmermann. But who is Zimmermann? And why has every major female celebrity and personality the likes of Beyoncé, Margot Robbie, Kendall Jenner and even the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton been spotted wearing them?
Despite the name, the brand is run by two-woman team Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, each with a background in fashion and marketing. In 1991, Nicky created a selection of tops and dresses and started selling them at Sydney’s Paddington Market. She’d continue creating and selling there for a while until a friend of hers, who happened to work for Vogue Australia, bought a top and it became an instant hit in the fashion mag’s office, leading to a two-page editorial that put the brand on the map. They quickly garnered traction and domestic buyers were trying their best to own a coveted piece from the newly discovered It brand. But what launched Zimmermann to global superstardom was their conscious decision to add a swimwear line to its prêt-à-porter line of sunny and laidback yet impeccably embroidered pieces.
Today, the humble homegrown brand went from selling dresses at a flea market to being sold at Barney’s New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales and Harrods. Not to mention even being stocked on premier online stores Net-a-Porter and Matches Fashion, and now available locally at Distinqt. With stores in major upscale shopping districts in the US and Europe, Zimmermann continuously spreads its wings with inimitable grace and unmistakable feminine flair.
