Shop Smart

- @peeweeisidro

Our annual shopping issue encourages you to shop with mindfulness as the times call for meaningful and discerning choices. We are in a point of time to make important decisions that matter; I hope you would be able to apply this principle on how you purchase, invest, or buy things as well. Don’t get me wrong—while our situation is far from the ideal, it is also important to reward yourself—because ultimately these “things” we spend on become part of our identity and somehow become an extension of ourselves. It is more than just about buying a bag, jewelry or piece of clothing. It is the connection you feel about a certain piece, the whole experience of buying into an idea of that design, or what that brand or label stands for and making it part of your own personal style. Also, it is a mood and confidence booster; ultimately they help us feel better about ourselves.

Clearly, the quantity over quality and “more is more” mentalities are obsolete. Popular cultural movements like the one espoused by Marie Kondo validate this. Producers and brands have moved toward sustainability as consumers demand changes and concrete plans of action on how production can be better executed while still serving the needs of its market and also addressing its ecological footprint. So the next time you plan on getting that item and adding to cart, I hope you think hard if you need, want or love it—because if you truly love it, it will find a place in your wardrobe and serve its purpose in many ways, while making you look and feel good. Design, quality, wearability and a timeless appeal are some of the things I usually consider when buying something, and this has helped me build a well edited wardrobe that is smart, useful and hardworking.

This month is all about smart investments and indulging on the things that truly matter— whether it be your dream wedding dress, your first jewelry, a grand vacation or your health; it’s all about spending wisely and ultimately, investing into worthwhile experiences. We also touch on designer collaborations—a trend that is quite prevalent in fashion nowadays. Read about what we think makes a good partnership, and what doesn’t and why you should or shouldn’t jump into this bandwagon. And lastly, we put the spotlight on luxury heritage brands and zone in on why they have a loyal following, as well as how they’ve managed to evolve with the times.

Gracing the November cover, fresh from her win, is Miss Universe Philippines Beatrice Luigi Gomez—a queen like no other. Hers is another story of overcoming challenges and how being true to herself and living authentically makes her a true winner.

Enjoy the issue!
