-

The age of social media has made us more hyperaware of beautifying our surroundings, and who among us hasn’t been drawn to a spot simply because it was just too pretty to ignore. In a world of Insta-worthy moments and shooting for the ‘Gram, why not create your own pretty spots around your home and at work?

Event Styles’ husband-and-wife team Don and Kathy King have been creating magical moments for their clients’ milestones for the past three years. Kathy is an interior designer by profession, while Don managed their construction business. They started Event Styles after one of their clients asked for help in styling his wedding. Challenged by the task at hand, the couple decided to take on the job, loved it, and the rest is history. From a starry night debut to an Oriental Christmas wedding, this designing couple has a limitless supply of ideas they can’t wait to turn into reality. And because we can’t always have Kathy King transforming our home and workspace into our own pictureperfect lala-land, she shares some of her fool-proof design tips to make any space ‘Gram ready.

Start with a blank slate.

Tidying up and getting rid of clutter makes it easier to create that IGworthy spot. You’ll be surprised at the difference a clean room makes.

Decide on a theme.

In essence, themes are combinations of shapes and colors that are time proven crowd pleasers. Some of my favorite themes are bohemian, elegant, and tropical. Using them as a guide makes decorating your space a breeze!

Choose a focal point.

Most focal points tend to be in the center of an area and out of the way of any obstructions. For example, it can be a ceiling, table, bookshelf, or wall.

Use key design pieces.

My go-to elements to add flair to a space are candles, flowers, and metallics. Fire, metal, and cloth resonate with our most primal instincts and radiate a feeling of comfort and class.

Add personalized details.

Let your personality shine through with details that reveal something about you, your taste, your personality. You can display your record collection, tie-dye t-shirts, baby shoes, Harry Potter book collection and more.

Make use of lighting.

The use of track lights, uplights, and LED strips can add a world of texture and color to your space. Some models even let you change colors and brightness allowing you to change the mood of your space at any time.

Practice restraint.

One mistake that beginner designers often make is to overcomplicate and over-clutter their creations. I’ve found that restraint gives your design elements room to shine.
