Officials take oath

- By Regina Mae Ronquillo

ALL THE newly elected officials in the city yesterday took their oath of office at Sangguniang Panglungsod.

Mayor Sara Duterte, Vice-Mayor Sebastian Duterte, the four incoming congressmen from the city and the 24 newly-elected councilors in the city’s three districts all vowed to serve the public during their oath-taking yesterday.

Duterte, elected for a third non-consecutive term as the chief executive of the city, vowed for an insurgency-free city by next year (see separate story).

First District Rep. Paolo Duterte, Second District Rep. Vincent Garcia, Third District Rep, Isidro Ungab and Marino Partylist Rep. Carlo Lisandro Gonzalez also pledged their allegiance as the members of the House of Representatives.

In his speech, Rep. Duterte assured to “come up with laws that will positively impact our people — usher in livelihood, generate jobs, improve our infrastructures, provide education opportunities to less fortunate children and the youth, and bring about sustainable development across sectors, especially in the countryside.” Paolo is the second Duterte to hold the post, following his father, now President Rodrigo Duterte, who served for one term in 1998-2001.

Garcia, a come-backing congressman on his fourth non-consecutive term, said he will make sure to meet the expectations of the people and cater their concerns.

He first served from 2001-2004, replacing his father, Manuel Garcia. He was re-elected in 2004 and 2007. He will replace his sister Mylene who also served for three-term.

Come-backing Rep. Isidro Ungab has pledged to push for the passage of the creation of Metro Davao. Isidro replaced his brother Alberto, now an incoming cioty councilor who served for one-term as congressman.

Sebastian Duterte, who separately took his officer later in the day, also vowed to serve the people just like his father and elder siblings. He is the fourth Duterte to serve as the city Vice Mayor, following his father Rodrigo, elder brother Paolo and sister Sara.
