Relief operation continues for Davao’s flood victims
DAVAO CITY--Relief operations continued for flood victims in several villages here on Friday, with the local government and private partners pooling resources to provide food and other basic needs to some 3,000 individuals.
The City Social Services Office staff manning the operation in Barangay Talomo, one of the biggest barangays badly-hit by the August 28 flashflood, received relief assistance from SM Cares such as canned sardines and tuna, instant noodles, rice, and distilled water.
A soup kitchen stationed at the evacuation center in the area continues operating to provide food for the victims.
Power and water were partially restored in some affected villages as of Thursday, while connections in the
rest of the affected areas are still undergoing repair.
Hadji Ibrahim Ayadi, 62, a resident of Talomo Muslim Village, said the flood was the sixth that he has experienced in over 50 years in Talomo area. The flood was so severe that Ayadi said he and his family had to seek shelter at the second level of their mosque.
Ayadi, a fisherman with five children and 15 grandchildren, said the family immediately evacuated upon hearing the siren that warned of an impending calamity.
“In times of disaster we have to save our lives first by following advisory given us,” he said in the dialect.
Meanwhile, authorities are reminding the public to always monitor the regular weather updates as well as warning signals for flooding and heavy downpour. (PNA)
