COTABATO CITY (MindaNews) – The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on Wednesday adopted its official emblem months after deliberations in the parliament of the transitional regional government.

BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim, better known as Murad Ebrahim signed on Wednesday the law creating the region’s official flag, the first Act passed by its parliament.

The flag has four distinctive colors, a crescent, a seven-rayed star and a kris, a signature Moro sword.

“The Bangsamoro flag is reflective of its people’s identity, history, heritage, struggles and aspirations,” according to BARMM spokesperson lawyer Naguib Sinarimbo during the weekly scheduled Kapihan sa BARMM.

The flag has three quarter colors. On the top is green which reflects the Islamic teachings and principles.

The middle portion is white, signifying peace,

Sakina (tranquility) and righteousness.

The bottom part is colored red which symbolizes the fallen Mujahideens who fought for the recognition of identity and self-determination of the Bangsamoro.

In the middle of the white portion, a crescent is found along with the seven-rayed yellow star signifying the bright future that awaits the Bangsamoro.

The crescent symbolizes the principles that has guided the Bangsamoro in the struggle for self-determination.

The seven-rayed star represents the five provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao Del Sur, Sulu, Tawi-tawi and Basilan, Cotabato City and the 63 barangays that are now part of the Bangsamoro territory.

The white kris in the middle of the flag’s red portion symbolizes the protection and resistance of the Bangsamoro and other indigenous peoples in the territory against oppression, tyranny and injustice.
