PH sports officials to athletes: Don’t train in China as coronavirus alert remains
APART from considering the postponement of the 10th ASEAN Para Games next month, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has decided to prevent local athletes from traveling to China to train or compete amid the coronavirus scare.
“In terms of preventive measures, we have put out information materials for our national athletes and coaches,” said Marc Velasco, the agency’s chief of staff and national training director.
“Caution will be exercised on allowing athletes and coaches traveling to other countries for international competitions.”
The PSC board met on Thursday to discuss rescheduling its events to safeguard athletes and the public against the 2019 novel coronavirus.
PSC chairman William Ramirez said the sports agency has postponed the National Sports Summit 2020, Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy, and Children’s Games.
“The board discussed the current situation, and we have decided that we are postponing major events of the PSC as a safety measure against the Novel Coronavirus,” Ramirez said.
He also recommended the postponement of the scheduled holding of the 10th ASEAN Para Games in March.
“We have a board resolution advising the paralympics to possibly postpone the games,” said Ramirez. ABS-CBN News
