Four new committees proposed to be created for 19th City Council

- BY SAMANTHA T. BURGOS

FOUR more additional committees will soon be created in the City Council.

Councilor Melchor Quitain, chair of the committee on rules, laws and ordinances, told reporters that lawmakers are currently deliberating the proposed additional committees to be included in the 19th City Council.

“We are still working on these four proposed committees. It needs study and deliberation for each concern to come up with the most appropriate rules before the term ends,” he said.

The proposed committees are dedicated to the four areas: terrorism, disaster, future generations, and indigenous people.

“We need to come up with the anti-terrorism and disaster committees since these are ongoing problems. Like the disaster, in which a series of calamities and a virus outbreak are experienced, and I don’t think it will be going away soon,” he said.

As for the committee on future generations, Quitain said that it will tackle the development of the ordinances, resolutions,

and projects of the local government.

“There should be a committee that will assess what will happen to the projects, ordinances resolutions that we passed now, how will it be addressed in the future? What will happen to the city if it will be fully developed? Will it end there? That will be a problem if we are not prepared,” he said.

The committee on indigenous community, which is under the committee of Councilor Jaffar Marohomsalic, aims to reach out more to the IPs.

The proposal was the result of the Executive-Legislative Agenda with Mayor Sara Duterte.

Meanwhile, Quitain lauded the 19th City Council’s performance within its term. He said their performance is “efficiently” executed.

“The items under unfinished business are not that many compared to the previous years and the previous council. We really can finish the agenda within the day or, if not, fewer items are placed under unfinished business,” he said.

He also said that they have been right on schedule as they have been working hard to finish all items in one session as much as possible.
