Cooperative-run cafe opens at the City Library
THE Library Cafe by Coop Cups opened finally had its formal opening last January 18 at the ground level of the Davao City Library and Information Center located along Ponciano Reyes Street, Davao City.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Agripino Torres, chief executive officer of the MAGSIGE (Manuel Guianga and Sirib Growers and Employees) Multi-Purpose Cooperative, City Councilor Jonard Dayap, City Councilor Marissa Abella and Department of Agriculture XI Regional Director Abel Monteagudo.
"We are happy to be involved with this endeavor as this will surely help motivate our farmer members to improve their coffee production. This is just the beginning," said Torres during their
guesting last January 17 at PEP Talks press forum at SM Lanang Premier.
The Coop Cups is a consortium of the MAGSIGE-MPC and the Model Cooperative Network, with the support of the PhilCafe Project. The Library Cafe is just the first coffee shop project operated under the consortium as they plan to open a chain of coffee shops around the city.
This social enterprise of the consortium aims to promote and sell local coffee and other local products of its members.
"This is a good platform for us to promote our coffee and the products of our farmers in Davao Region, especially that our local coffee is getting raves here and abroad," shared Melissa Alado, Business Development Services Manager of PhilCAFE Project.
Another highlight of the cafe's opening was the “Coffee Tasting from Different Origins”, a coffee tasting and appreciation featuring some of the award-winning and best specialty coffees from the region.
