NEGROS OCCIDENTAL, Oct. 5 (PIA) -- The double A (AA) National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS)accredited Sagay City

Abattoir in the province is now slaughtering hogs for pig carcass or meat shipment to Cebu City.

With its expanded operation, Sagay City Abattoir now caters to commercial hog raisers in the province for slaughtering and cold storage.

It has now a slaughtering capacity of 50 to 100 heads per hour and can store (cold storage) 50 to 100 tons pork carcass, poultry and other meat products.

During its two-day expanded operation, it has slaughtered 176 heads of fattened pigs from JALTAS piggery, equivalent to 11.3 tons carcass on storage scheduled for shipment to Cebu Judphilan Foods Corporation as the buyer. The average live weight of slaughtered pig is 105 kilos with carcass recovery of 81 percent. This initiative is through the Provincial Government, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), and the City of Sagay to promote the marketing of frozen pork carcass which is more advantageous compared to selling live animals. PVO wants to assure the quality of meat produced by commercial and backyard hog raisers and to ensure sustainable market for hogs which is seen to eventually include the marketing of pigs raised by backyard raisers thru the Alliance of Hog Raisers Association with 15,000 members. The PVO aims to eventually brand the produced pork carcasses at Sagay City Abattoir as Negros Pork, reaching not only region-wide but the national market and which will eventually enter the export market.
