Defense chief leads DND 18-day campaign to end VAW
Secretary of National Defense Delfin N. Lorenzana led the kick-off ceremony of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) at the Department of National Defense on November 26, 2018.
With the theme, “VAWFREE Community Starts with Me”, the Secretary called each and every one to reflect on the individual values especially on how each one values women in their personal lives.
Lorenzana said that despite having laws such as the R.A. 9262 or the AntiViolence Against Women & Children Act and the Magna Carta or R.A. 9710, which aims to protect the rights of women and children, violence against women still remains a global issue and a public concern.
The Secretary added that women, especially those who are victims of violence, are usually put to blame when they stand up for their rights and those who speak out are often subjected to victim-shaming and discrimination. Because of this, most women tend to adopt a “culture of silence” instead of speaking out to seek legal redress.
“Kung sino pa ang nabiktima, siya pa ang masama at kahiya-hiya kapag siya ay nagsalita o nagreklamo,” the Secretary said.
Lorenzana said that as the DND continues to transform, so should the culture and quality of its workforce. The Secretary added that everyone should start by stopping jokes that objectify, commodify, and demean women.
“Kapag nagkamali ng biro ang mga kasama natin, o kahit mas nakakataas pa sa atin, huwag tayong tumawa,” he said. He added that by being conscious about the things we say will make other people realize their mistake and consequently refrain from doing it again. He also reiterated the importance of the sensitivity in our choice of language especially in the workplace.
“Simpleng respeto lamang para sa ating kapwa tao – anuman ang kanyang kasarian, ang susi para mawakasan ang karahasan laban sa kababaihan o kanino man sa ating lipunan,” Lorenzana urged the One Defense Team.
