DOT holds advance tourism statistics training

Palawan News - - PROVINCE -

Some 40 municipal planning and tourism officers recently attended a training for the standardization of data gathering on tourism information in Palawan on Tuesday.

Ryan Carlos, DOT officer for tourism development planning, said the training was a series of Standard Local Tourism Statistic System (SLTSS) being implemented by the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Carlos said local tourism officials should know how to gather data in standardized procedure to help them in crafting tourism development plans in their municipalities.

“Because the plan is intended for the tourists who visit their destinations. So dapat mas akma ‘yung mga proyekto, plano at programa hinggil sa pangangailangan or preferences ng ating mga turista,” he pointed out.

Some of the data that needs to be collected are the tourist arrival, accommodation establishments, visitor attractions and departure points such as airports and terminals, he added

Carlos said the MIMAROPA Region has recorded 2,071,224 in tourism arrivals in 2017 of which 70 percent or 1,498,847 came from Palawan.

Palawan has also recorded 1,071 accommodation establishments in the same year.

“Mayroon tayong unique understanding kung ano ang mga data na kinokolekta lang; tool para maiwasan ang waste of time, waste of effort, waste of money and manpower dahil mga importanteng information lang ang kinukuha natin,” he added.

The training is in cooperation with the Provincial Tourism Promotions and Development Department ( PTPDD) aimed at teaching the participants on providing standards in the gathering of tourism information and data.
