The Palawan Provincial Board (PB) approved Tuesday the construction of two Alternative Learning System (ALS) centers in Brooke’s Point and Rizal towns. “Based on the law, we should maintain and support complete, adequate and integrated system of education relevant to the needs of society. Also, we should encourage non-formal, informal and indigenous learning system as well as self-learning, independent and outof-school study programs or those that particularly responds to the needs of the community,” Board Member Sharon Abiog-Onda said. Abiog said the request is in accordance with Republic Act 9155 or Governance Act for Basic Education. The funding for their construction in Aramaywan, Rizal and Brooke’s Point towns in southern Palawan was a request by Palawan Governor Jose Alvarez to Engr. Saylito Purisima of the Provincial Engineering Office (PEO). Abiong also said the centers are available to anyone who cannot access formal education in schools. ALS is a program of the Department of Education which provides equal rights in education particularly for the less fortunate and out-of-school-youth.
