Busuanga’s Calauit Safari Park up for renovation
The Calauit Safari Park in Busuanga town will undergo a month-long renovation in April this year, aiming to improve facilities that cater to tourists.
Myrna Lacanilao, head of the Provincial Economic Enterprise Development Office (PEEDO), said Tuesday they are currently conducting the bidding process for the rehabilitation of the facilities inside the park, including the dormitory, information center, restrooms, and the animal shelters.
“Hopefully, maka-start na tayo by April para naman mabago na. Sobrang dilapidated na [ang mga building]. Kaya kapag nasimulan ‘yan papagandahin talaga natin, paunti-unti lang, maayos natin ‘yan,” she said.
Lacanilao said the provincial government allocated P5.2 million for the rehabilitation of the facilities of the safari park.
She said that per their record, Calauit was visited by over 4,000 tourists in 2018.
“Marami ang pumupunta, kailangan lang natin ayusin at pagandahin. So ako, tinatarget natin na matapos sa June,” she added.
Lacanilao also said they are planning to bring in additional animals in the safari park such as horses, tigers, and lions.
Currently, the park has 33 zebras, 27 giraffes, and 350 Calamian deer. It also has porcupines, civet cat, and wild bearded pig.
The park was formerly known as Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, a 3,700-hectare island in Busuanga which was established on August 21, 1976, through Presidential Proclamation No. 1578 issued by former president Ferdinand Marcos
