K-12 Curriculum: Boon or bane?
Since this article is entitled with a question, let me get it straight and start it with an answer. K -12 is both boon and bane. While it is necessary as much as possible to have only one stand on any matter, it is always best to acknowledge when a phenomenon is contributing, or when it is affecting.
For me, K -12 is boon and everyone believes so. It is beneficial in other countries thus it is immediately believed to be beneficial in the Philippines and for Filipino students and families. With K- 12 or the extended two years of education of high school students, they will have deeper understanding and knowledge of any subject as they would spend more time learning the principles, theories, philosophies, or formula of a given subject.
K- 12 students will have additional two years to check and decide which course they can take in college. Many students before K- 12 have actually gone to college but would just shift from one course to another because they cannot find themselves belonging to it.
K -12 is boon because after graduating from high school, one is already equipped and ready to land a job. For our country, this is very promising because graduates can already help their families with their financial needs. College becomes optional. But when students will have the means to pursue college, then finding more jobs after college with students being at par with other countries can become easier. K- 12 graduate students can work in other countries so easily.
On the other hand, K- 12 is a bane only because the curriculum needs to be improved more. It seemed to have been introduced by the past administration before t he new administration began thus the preparation was very limited. Many complaints are received as to the number of schools, number of students, books and reference materials, as well as teachers and their capacity to teach K- 12. Also, Filipino families need to be educated that there would be no extra fees for this extended study, only the basic provision of fare and allowance f or students that if they can only understand the benefits of K- 12, they can consider this additional expense as investment./
