Malay seeks 5-month MRF cleanup extension
BORACAY – The l ocal government of Malay, Aklan is asking for more time to clean up the centralized materials recovery facility (MRF) here.
It needs 150 more days to complete the hauling of residual waste from the MRF in Barangay Manoc-manoc to the sanitary landfill in Barangay Cabulihan in mainland Malay, said Engr. Arnold Solano, Environmental Management Services Unit chief.
Solano said they wrote the Environmental Management Bureau ( EMB) Region 6 requesting for the extension.
Malay was ordered to haul the garbage off the MRF in light of complaints about foul odor and air pollution. It was given until April 17.
But the local government failed to beat its deadline due to the continued increase in waste volume, said Solano.
“While hauling is ongoing, more garbage are also being dumped there every day, especially that it’s the ‘peak season,’” he said in an interview on Wednesday.
Some 30 tons of garbage loaded onto around 50 to 60 trucks were being taken to the MRF every day, said Solano.
The Environmental Management Services Unit chief said the five- month extension will be enough to complete the hauling.
Local government and EMB officials were set to meet next week to discuss the garbage problem in Boracay, Solano said.
Malay is also planning to reopen two other MRFs in barangays Yapak and Balabag, he said. ( PNA)
