Why students hate science

-  By Mary Grace Caroline Diaz, Capiz National High School

SCIENCE and Mathematics are two subjects that most students are not interested in. Often these two subjects are considered the most difficult among all the subjects that is being taught in school. However, let’s just focus on the aspect of the science subject and some of its reason why students hate it.

It seems to happen very often nowadays that people who are not scientists or aren’t interested in science feel the need to express very strong and negative view on it. There are a lot of factors that affects the reasons why students do not like science subjects.

SCIENCE DEALS WITH PROBLEM SOLVING.

Students often view problem solving as difficult and very hard to comprehend with. Students often are asked to memorize formulas and to attempt to figure out obscure word problems. For them, this is not teaching but rather a waste of time.

PHILIPPINES HAS A FATALISTIC CULTURE. For this reason alone they tend to dislike science subject because they thought that dealing or studying it will not change anything. Use the adjective fatalistic to describe someone who believes outcomes are determined in advance and can’t be changed. If a student thinks there’s no way he or she can pass his or her science exam and studying won’t change anything, then this mean they are fatalistic. We will often hear the phrase “Bahala Na” or what will happen happens, it’s God’s will, it is a common expression among Filipinos on the fatalistic outlook and strong dependence on the spirits who will take care of everything if they are really meant for a person. It is fatalistic in the sense that it evokes resignation to the consequences of one’s undertaking, but the intent of the phrase is providential in that it carries the wish or hope that Providence will personally take care of one’s future.

THE TEACHER IS BORING. One of the reasons and may be the number reason why students hate it. Teachers play very important in making their students like or love Science. Surely, everyone (even I) can all relate to this one because as students tend to zone out when they’re bored.

Students most often complain that lessons become boring when they feel like they’re too abstract or entirely irrelevant to them. In fact, everyone wondered why there is a need to learn subjects like this when they were at school. When students expand their horizons, it means they are interested in dealing with it. Teachers as always are the key in developing ones interest in such manners. Teachers must be willing to get out of the box in order to succeed. ( Paid article)
