- By Myrna S. Gania, Teacher II

REMEDIOS E. Vilches-San Lorenzo National High School, under the Department of Education’s Division of Guimaras, starts the Inclusive Education advocacy through school-based trainings for the faculty and the PTA.

On August 25-26, 2017, a total of 63 public schools’ district supervisors and school SpEd coordinators from elementary and secondary levels in the Division of Guimaras attended the 1st batch training at the Division Office Conference Hall, San Miguel, Jordan Guimaras.

In support to DepEd Order No. 72, s. 2009 entitled, “Inclusive Education as strategy for increasing participation rate of children,” roll out is implemented that aims to prepare schools in the regular setting, under the responsibility of a regular education teacher, and provide education for students with disabilities.

Myrna S. Gania, Teacher II and School’s SpEd Coordination of REV-SLNHS teachers, shares knowledge and skills on how to identify and manage LSENs, and provide services for these learners in their school.

All public schools are also required to provide special education services to LSENs whose conditions need individualized instruction and intervention.

Schools in Guimaras are currently in the Transition Phase which covers initials meetings done by the school personnel and preparatory activities prior to the implementation of the inclusion program proper. The preliminary tasks of public schools are as follows: Prepare School Action Plan on Inclusive Education – School Heads or SpEd Coordinators should have a campaign timeline to strengthen student-community awareness and facilitate the acceptance of children with special needs in the school.

Conduct School-Based INSET – The school personnel should be informed of the on-going advocacy of the Department of Education about the mainstreaming of LSENs.

Facilitate PTA Meetings – Parents should be aware about the international and local laws governing the rights of LSEN, different groups of LSENs, and Child Protection or Anti-Bullying Policies of the system.

Integrate topics in the Rights of LSENs and Child Protection & Anti-Bullying Policies in Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga (EsP) or Values class of the learners.

Conduct Assessment – Observe children who have manifestations for at least 3 months, accomplish appropriate tools and submit accomplished tools to School Heads for approval. (
