English lessons that high school students value the most

- By Ritchiel Ann I. Felizardo

TEACHERS must listen to what high school students point out as precious English skills in most surveys, because chances are, these are what they easily remember from their English class. With student’s reflection and comments, teachers can improve their teaching techniques of skills that students least like for them to appreciate more.

Some students appreciate learning how to write well- formed essays and stories of all types, from persuasive essays to sonnets. They also love to learn how to analyze a body of text and draw conclusions for things such as: the meaning of the text, the author’s motive for writing the text, and the names of the different literary devices the author uses.

Some students also has this to say about their English lessons especially in doing essay - the ability to write essays clearly, while structuring your essay to support your point, hopefully, infallibly.

You are encouraged to write essays like you know you’re right, not like you think you are right. You are also tutored on the correct usage of advanced and basic grammar skills, and vocabulary is emphasized as an important tool to be used in everyday speech and class essays. And you are guided in the advanced analysis of literary works and their themes and the author’s purpose behind his/her writing and many other things. It may sound intense, but that’s because it is. After all, high school is prep for college, military, and/or trade jobs. Of course, something that is worth keeping in mind: the intensity of this English class will definitely vary depending on if you are taking a standard course.

Some students value learning to analyze what they read, with low level inferences, general comprehension, and some metaphors and the like. They can do some basic essays showing they can analyze the books and present an argument at a very basic level. Students can even do short research papers to prepare them for the harder term papers in college. Research skills included credible resources, note-taking, internet safety, and using the library to find resources.

At a very basic level, it helps them understand what they read and make some point. It is the point where you are transitioning from reading just to know how to, to being able to really get and understand literature for what it is worth.

Furthermore, it provides a general communication ability that any functioning adult should have. Not getting to the point you understand novels at a high school level is going to impair you when you need to communicate more complicated ideas. Vocabulary – we were given vocabulary words and we had to visualize the word by drawing a picture. Also, we had vocabulary quizzes and we made contextrich sentences. ( Paid article)
