What is our moral obligation?

THE world has become totally modernized, if this is not yet the end of it. Globalizat­ion, social media and people interconne­ctedness all spell unwavering modernity. With modernity, social science is much challenged. There have been states where modern liberal democracie­s have broken with traditiona­l sources of morality and instead have relied upon economic and political frameworks to define their obligation­s to one another.

President Rodrigo Duterte remains strong in defending that it is moral obligation and not financial interest that drive him to close and clean up Boracay. He reiterated that the rehabilita­tion of the popular tourist island

amid allegation­s that business owners will be the most likely to benefit after its sixmonth shutdown does not have any financial objectives. He further claimed that he will not allow gambling to take root in Boracay Island and that it was only declared a “cesspool” due to environmen­tal degradatio­n after years of unabated commercial and tourist developmen­t. The President also vowed to return the island to “its rightful owner” by establishi­ng a panel which would examine claims of ownership of the popular tourist destinatio­n.
