Making people appreciate history
History is dull. History is obsolete. History is just about memorizing particular facts like the date, the names of the people. History is old. History is just history; it speaks for itself.
Actually, history will never be dull, obsolete, just about memorizing dates and names of people, and old because there is always something to learn and it can be applied in each day we live.
History will always be helpful for each and every one of us but there is a need for people to get just as enthusiastic or interested.
History can still be appreciated by many generations to come but I realized that we cannot just tell facts. Not every person would be interested by dates, events, and names alone.
We can change the format of the lesson into some kind of storytelling like how we used to do it when we were in kindergarten.
We can also add pictures or videos to the story we share to give the student the opportunity to feel like they were actually there when a particular event happened. If your way of doing the lesson captures the imagination of your student, you are one step closer to keeping t heir attention when it comes to what you are telling them.
Giving time for students to share their opinions and discuss this as members of opposing groups would be interesting because it tests their knowledge of the lesson and if they listened and/or studied or not.
We can also allow students to share what they know about the lesson or the resources they have such as news articles, diaries, pictures, videos, and the things that the person who is a part of the story used that are related to the lesson.
We can also ask students to summarize the story based on the time you stopped telling the story to check if they were listening as well as open- ended questions that can be linked to the story. It also serves as a cliffhanger for the story that keeps the students interested.
If we allow the students to participate not just by answering questions but also by sharing their opinions and what they know about the lesson, the students feel more eager to listen and participate and history would not sound as boring as they think it is.
History is fun. Only the presentation negates the fun. We need to work on the presentation if people find history boring. We need to allow the students to become a part of the story through asking them to share ideas and discuss stuff about the story. ( Paid article)
