Let’s talk about the importance of History

-  By Ma. Aprilin A. Malicudio, Dumarao, Capiz

“A PEOPLE without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

When we talk about history, the things that come to our mind are world wars, bombing, people behind it and so on and so forth. Surely, these things made impact in the way we live today and have influenced us one way or another in short –history is all around you.

For example we tend to ask ourselves why our country was named Philippines. What happened when we were colonized from different foreigners back then? Why the name “Jose Protacio Rizal” is very famous in our country? It’s because there is history behind it –behind everything.

I had a student before who actually asked me why we need to study history. I still remember how he asked it in a manner that everyone in our class would laugh at it. Well, this has been a common question for me. I have been asked multiple times the importance of history in our lives.

In fact, many cultures throughout time have not questioned the study of history; it was simply part of the rounded curriculum. If we trace back the history, many cultures devoted a significant amount of time and effort to study history, believing that the past helps a child understand who he or she is as a person. It also helped them to understand their place in society and how to become contributing members. In fact, many courts employed historians to record the activities of the monarch and his/her reign, and it was a very prestigious position

The importance of studying history can be seen in its relevance by giving us intellectual growth and development. This is merely because studying the events of the past give us better understanding of how the world came to be. How certain cultures was different from the other. In what aspects and why they differ.

In the first place, history offers a storehouse of information about how people and societies behave. Understanding the operations of people and societies is difficult, though a number of disciplines make the attempt.

History well told is beautiful. Many of the historians who most appeal to the general reading public know the importance of dramatic and skillful writing – as well as of accuracy. The uses of history are varied. Studying history can help us develop our understanding of the world. (
