Remembering Dr. Jose Rizal
RIZAL VISITS ILOILO
National hero Dr. Jose Rizal flags down a chiles (one-passenger horse-drawn coach) upon his arrival at the Port of Iloilo on Aug. 14, 1896 to visit friend Raymundo Melliza in Molo, in this painting by renowned Ilonggo artist Art Geroche. According to historians, as Rizal passed by Calle Real (now JM Basa Street) he compared it to the then bustling Escolta in Manila. Rizal dropped by Iloilo on his way back to Manila after ending his exile in Dapitan, a remote Mindanao town. On Dec. 30, 1896 two years after his Iloilo visit, Rizal was executed. Today, the nation remembers the 122nd anniversary of his martyrdom.
