Teaching innovations for quality MAPEH learning

- By Marlyn G. Garde, Teacher I Tapaz National High School, Tapaz, Capiz

INNOVATIONS which simply means new idea, creative thoughts and new imaginations in the form of new device or method, can be used interchangeably with science or technology.

In other words, when there is new technology, there is new innovation. This age is called digital age because of the sprout, and the rapid and robust growth of digital technology, or digital innovation. If we will not integrate the digital implications of the new technology on our traditional curriculum that are mostly textbook-based, what you as a teacher teaches your student in Music on pages 1 to 5 of your textbook may already be finished by a bored student in one Youtube sitting.

This tells us that the particular student will be advanced in class and will left others whose mind is not that as innovative and whose willingness or thirst for knowledge is not that immense. This type of students will just then feel helpless in class and will further develop in them gaps in their studies.

Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH) is one academic subject that students would find much interest about because it enhances their creativity and gifts or talents, and it develops student’s life skills.

Teachers should tap technology or should be innovative enough to make their lesson more applicable to this modern type of learners or students. Students from when they were very small, toddlers to be exact, they already manifest talents innate in them or that they inherited from their equally talented parents. If they are inclined to music, they would find ways to nurture that.

If school is boring, students of today would resort to Youtube or other online platforms where they can easily see how things are done. If they are gifted with a voice, they can just look for and watch Kelly Clarkson or Taylor Swift to find inspiration from. While there are self-taught kids who have also gone viral and famous, it is much better if we straighten up such learning and

guide our students in the proper venue – our classroom - where they can gain adequate knowledge.

Integrating digital innovations in today’s MAPEH textbook can encourage the use of internet-based resources that will better meet the needs and interest of the 21st century learners.

The internet is swamped with materials that can inspire us teachers with what to deliver as creatively as possible getting the full attention of our students. For example, in teaching health, we can use animated clips that will explicitly show concepts of hygiene and bodily functions.

Through educational Youtube videos in our music class, we can show to our students the proper way to hold an instrument, and to note the sound it produces. This means that it is no longer necessary for us to bring an instrument in school, or it is really boring that we just show the looks of the instrument to students via textbook, to highlight it and hear and see firsthand how it is played, audio-visuals can be much useful.

In other words, textbook can now just serve more of as a guide to do their own research on lessons, and with such it opens opportunity for teachers to lead students to explore computer programs and put into good use their mobile phones by downloading the right applications.

PE teachers can use apps and videos to show a fun and dynamic workout programs that are good for their age, because some would curious already in toning their muscles but without guidance from their PE teachers will pick the wrong program from Youtube. Students nowadays will always look for new and exciting things to do. They will for sure digitally find things associated with their interests.

If we don’t engage them in our subjects, especially MAPEH that takes root from their talents and skills, we are only pushing these student’s future go astray. ( Paid article)
