ENGLISH is the most widely used language. We take pride in being on of the world’s best English speakers, but as generations move on, the ability to use English diminishes with time.

K-12 curriculum incorporated the use of Mother Tongue Based Instruction in the primary level as a bridge in learning Filipino and English.

This is our practice in the K- 12 curriculum which I think could affect the proficiency in both teaching and learning the English language. Some teachers usually revert to using the native language in teaching Science and Math because they want to cater the needs of the so called struggling pupils.

Teachers in the elementary level are always confronted with the need to teach English to their students. English is basic communication tool for learning for higher grade levels in the elementary level that it is used in many subjects in the upper class years.

As many people would say, the best way to improve proficiency in English is to go back to the basics. Teachers must observe the correct subject and verb agreement.

They should also observe the correct usage of words, increase their vocabulary through frequent reading, and acquaint themselves with the latest and updated news through the habit of reading the newspaper and watching news. As teachers become proficient in the use of English, they can require and guide their pupils in expressing themselves using the English language.

Teachers should then mindful of the needs of easy ways on how to teach English language to young learners. Knowing the level of English language proficiency at which your students are functioning academically is vital in order to be able them to scaffold appropriately.

Teachers must carefully and wisely plan their class time. Clear standards should be used to measure each student’s progress. Teachers should be thoroughly competent to teach Mathematics and Science subject using English as a medium of instruction so as to ensure competitiveness in this fast changing world.
