Morning fire displaces 29 families in Iloilo City

ILOILO City – The fire that hit Barangay Rizal in La Paz District here around 5:40 a.m. on Monday destroyed an estimated P1.1 million worth of properties, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Initial investigat­ion by the BFP found the fire to have started in the house of Mary An A. Francisco and spread to neighborin­g houses.

Investigat­ors are still looking for the cause of the blaze that was declared to have been controlled by 6:19 a.m.

The City Social Welfare and Developmen­t Office (CSWDO) reported that 23 houses were burned down and t wo were partially damaged.

Fire affected 29 families or 99 persons with four of the families as sharers and 25 as house owners.

“They are currently in evacuation centers and our CSWDO was able to immediatel­y provide food and non- food assistance,” Donna Magno, Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer, said.

She said the barangay hall, chapel, daycare center, and Sanggunian­g Kabataan hall have been used as evacuation centers since the school buildings were used as vot i ng centers.
