Ateneo notches 1st win in UAAP women’s volley

MANILA – Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles finally tasted a win in the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball. It defeated Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 25-16, 25-14, 2514, on Thursday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

F a i t h N i s p e r o s spearheade­d the offense with 14 points off 11 attacks, two aces, and a block as the defending champions Blue Eagles entered the win column with a 1-3 standing.

Lyann De Guzman and Joan Narit finished with 12 and 10 points, respective­ly while Jaja Maraguinot steered the Ateneo ship with 14 excellent sets along with three points and nine excellent digs.

After a strong opening performanc­e, the Blue Eagles stepped on the gas in the second frame and led by as big as 13 points, 21-8, off an ace from Maraguinot before

eventually bagging the set for a quick 2-0 advantage.

Ateneo carried its momentum in the third set, building a ninepoint lead as Alexis Miner and Faith Nisperos put on the finishing touches with a quick and an ace, respective­ly.

“We’re happy na nasa win column na kami,” said Blue Eagles

head coach Oliver Almadro. “I’m not saying naman na sobrang lungkot namin in the past few games but alam namin na we are going up e, talagang may instances lang na we really have to recover right away.”

Chen Tagaod led the way for the 1-3 Lady Tamaraws with 10 points, seven excellent receptions, and four excellent digs, while Negrense Nikka Medina and Jean Asis had four apiece.

National University Lady Bulldogs, on the other hand, remained spotless after four matches after hacking out a 2511, 25-20, 25-13 sweep over the struggling University of the East Lady Warriors (0-4).

Sheena Toring scored 13 points off eight attacks, three aces, and two blocks while Ivy Lacsina converted 12 attacks for 13 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

Adamson University Lady Falcons, meanwhile, notched its second win in four games after a 25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-11 beating of erswhile unbeaten University of the Philippine­s Fighting Maroons (3-1)./
