Yulo, Escarpe strike SEA Games golds

M A N I L A – Wo r l d gymnastics champion Carlos Edriel Yulo and kurash bet Jack Escarpe delivered gold medals as the 31st Southeast Asian Games went full blast on Friday in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The 22- year- old Yulo bucked a slip in the pommel horse t o amass 85.150 points in six apparatuse­s and bagged the gold medal in the individual all- around event last night.

“All I’m thinking is how to perform well and I think we did well,” said Yulo, who bested Vietnamese Le Thanh Tung ( 84.050) and Dinh Phuong Thanh (82.450), who settled for silver and bronze, respective­ly.

Yulo also led the artistic gymnastics team that included Juancho Miguel Besana, John Matthew Vergara, Jann Gwynn Timbang and Justine Ace de Leon to the silver medal in the team event.

Yulo will still have a chance to add to his medal haul. He advanced to the finals of the vault, high bar, parallel bar, pommel horse, rings, and floor exercise to be played on Sunday and Monday.

Escarpe, meanwhile, clinched Team Philippine­s’ other gold medal on the night of Friday the 13th. He ruled the men’s 73 kg event. It was the Philippine kurash team’s seventh medal overall.

Jones Llabres Inso, meanwhile, fell short of delivering another

gold medal for the country. He settled for a runner up finish in the men’s taijiquan event.

The La Trinidad, Benguet native Inso scored 9.70 points to take an early lead only to be beaten by Zhi Yan Tan of Malaysia, who clinched the gold with his 9.71 points.

The Philippine rowing team, meanwhile, copped three bronze medals to increase its total medal haul to eight on Friday at the Thuy Nguyen Hai Phong Aquatics Center.

Edgar Ilas, Roque Abala Jr., Zuriel Sukintac, and Joachim de Jesus placed third in the men’s lightweigh­t coxless event with 7:00.117. Indonesia and Vietnam won the gold and silver respective­ly.

Joanie Delgaco, Kharl Julianne Sha Bengco, Feiza Jane Lenton, and Alyssa Hannah Go clocked 7:30.148 for the bronze medal in women’s lightweigh­t quadruple sculls, behind Vietnam and Indonesia.

Athens Tolentino, Adrian Maxilom, CJ J asmin and Emmanuel Joseph Obana finished third with a time of 6:46.841 in men’s lightweigh­t quadruple. Indonesia and Vietnam won the gold and silver./ PN
