SEA RECLAMATION TO EXPAND ILOILO CITY’S LAND AREA

-

IT IS GOOD that Mayor Jerry is exploring this possibility. Bacolod City has done this already. And so is Cebu City.

Let us see how this land reclamation proposal will pan out under the incoming Marcos 2.0 administration.

In 2017, a local real estate developer proposed to the city government a P45-billion project that will reclaim 365 hectares of land from the Iloilo Strait. Mahimo kuno two artificial islands.

The islands were envisioned to become Iloilo City’s new centers of economic growth. Seven bridges will connect the islands to mainland Iloilo City. Nothing happened to this proposal, however.

Progressive cities abroad increased their land areas through reclamation like those in China, United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan. Thus, Mayor Jerry’s reclamation proposal is very exciting. It will take Iloilo City to the next level.

Prez Du30, however, expressed concern over reclamation proposals and activities. Source of corruption kuno.

Just last month, he directed acting Environment Secretary Jim Sampulna to halt the acceptance of applications for reclamation activities.

The Prez said proposals to conduct massive land reclamation were nothing but a breeding ground for corruption.

“Tanang application karon sa reclamation — tanan and it could include Cebu and Mindanao — giingnan nako si Acting Secretary na iundang tanan (All the applications right now for reclamation — all and it could include Cebu and Mindanao — I told the Acting Secretary to stop all of it),” he said in a speech delivered in Lapu-Lapu City.

Prez Du30 smelled something fishy in massive land reclamations. He said he could not support reclamation activities because they would benefit just the “big” companies.

Is this true? Tanan nga atay kag batikulon ma- corner lang sang mga contractors and their padrinos?
