In home economics, we usually teach our students to not only food and be amazing at chores, but we also help them with knowing the dos and the dots of budgeting.

Getting organized while cooking and planning meals for the week will help students stay within their budget. Students should merely remember to check their refrigerator, freezer, and cabinets before they go shopping so they know exactly what they need and are less likely to overbuy. Students are more likely to follow through if they make a list of everything.

Recipes requiring a unique ingredient should be avoided. Some recipes require a unique item that you might not have on hand. What is the price of the ingredient? Is the packaging tiny or large? Can you incorporate it into other dishes before it spoils? If we just want to use an ingredient once, it might not be worthwhile to purchase it. Try the recipe with an ingredient you already have at home or omit the ingredient altogether. Cooking experiments are enjoyable since we could be pleasantly surprised by the results.(
