ILOILO City – Vendors at the Iloilo Central Market have until tomorrow, May 16, t o relocate t o t heir respective temporary stalls to give way to the market’s redevelopment.

There are around 1,200 vendors at the central market.

Mari c e l Mabaqu i a o, chief of the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) of the city government, said the vendors started relocating last week.

“Sa sige- sige naton nga meeting sa ila, naintindihan naman nila,” said Mabaquiao.

The vendors are free to modify their temporary stalls.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jerry Treñas said market vendors group leader Rex Donasco and company, who filed a case against the redevelopment of the central market, will be given temporary stalls if they so request.

As to the vendors at the Iloilo Terminal Market popularly known as “Super”, they are given one month to transfer to temporary stalls, or from May 1 to 31.

There are around 1,600 vendors at Super.

Once redeveloped, the Iloilo Terminal Market and Iloilo Central Market are seen to be the first green markets in the Visayas, according to Treñas.

The city mayor said solar panels, and natural light and ventilation will be used in the two markets.

Under a public- private partnership ( PPP) scheme, the city government signed a lease agreement with SM Prime Holdings for the redevelopment of the city’s two biggest public markets.

Treñas said a wastewater treatment plant will also be established, adding that the treated wastewater can still be used for other purposes like for watering plants and flushing toilets./
