Importance of Values Education

- ❙ By: Christine F. Luza, MT-I Capiz National High School

What defines the best school? It is the one with the most modern and high tech facilities? It is perhaps the one with the most advanced science and math programs? Or maybe, it is the one with the most competitive athletic or humanities department? The one with the most trophies, medals, accreditation and distinctions?

In choosing a school, discerning parents consider those factors among many others. The competence of the faculty, convenience and safety of the locations, reasonable fees and even the identity and background of other students are carefully scrutinized. All this trouble and expense to ensure the future success of their children. But unknowingly, they may overlook a very important aspect for a truly holistic development that is values education.

Values Education is a simple and straight forward enough subject. Others may even consider it as common sense. Yet, reading and knowing about it is a worlds away from doing it and having schools enforce its practice. Indeed, what is an outstanding athletic reputation if winning is the ultimate goal and learning sportsmanship and teamwork is merely optional.

Fame and money is not everything. The most successful people are not necessarily the smartest. They are those who find happiness and contentment in life by cultivating meaningful relationships with their family, friends and loved ones. They are those who have learned to adapt to society and cherish only what is truly important.

Values education is just as important as other core subjects. It guides students in all their endeavors. Through this, they recognize the efforts of their opportunities and give importance to their studies. This makes them work harder, get better grades and more adaptive in adulthood.

There is no single best school, because every student have unique needs and interests. Knowledge and information can be gained through different means, but values are best learned and experienced in a good school.(
