The Need to Read Books
Why do our students not really like reading? Maybe it’s because they immediately think of it is an uninteresting endeavor. But then, we are knowledgeable enough to know some good reasons anyone must read a book. After all, reading is one of the most beneficial activities we can think of. It benefits not only in our mind, but really enriches our spirit. So why, indeed, do we need to read?
First, it feeds in our minds; it provides us countless knowledge. A book helps us in studying or re-searching ideas or facts. But while internet has now become popular and students can now search what they need online, books equally contain information but only cheaper than internet. Second, reading entertain us. When we are bored and have nothing to do, we can try to just read a story book and wouldn’t notice that the time passes quickly. Such wonderful time to have fun! Next, stories teach us lessons. Books – particularly works of fiction like legends, fables and fairy tales – teach us moral lessons, instilling the right values and virtues in the reader. Children, while young, must practice reading books – it is much better than playing computers because nothing must can be learned in playing computers, which to some it just a waste of time and money. Reading books teaches the readers a lot, giving them ideas about places, persons, foods or plants and so many more. Reading books also widens our vocabulary or the number of words we know. Reading books afford us the opportunity to know more words and their meanings. The more we read, the more we are inclined to use the words because we will eventually know how and what they will mean in many contexts. Books also widen our imagination. Because most storybooks come to us with only words, and hardly pictures, we are more compelled to draw the pictures of the story ourselves, which makes us more imaginative, and creative. It motivates us to picture realities presented in the book. It forces us to draw the images ourselves. It makes us creative; it makes us inventive and skillful in creating possibilities for ourselves, which can serve us in various ways in due time.(
