THE PEOPLE of Iloilo City are now realizing they have lost someone very valuable. With the smart, probing, principled, and vocal former councilor Plaridel Nava quitting the Sangguniang Panlungsod, the city council feels very different and strange.

Councilor Pla acted as a counterbalance, ensuring that decisions made by the council or by the executive branch were scrutinized. Now, without him, not a few fear there is a risk that council decisions could be made without full transparency. City government officials might not be held accountable for their actions, leading to potential misuse of power. Tonto!

When city council decisions are made without thorough examination, the reasons behind those decisions can remain opaque to both council members and the public. This can erode trust in the institution.

A lack of oversight and scrutiny can open the door for corrupt practices. When officials feel that their actions aren’t being monitored or questioned, there may be fewer deterrents against unethical behavior.
