Ampatuan Sr. returns to jail in ambulance
SUSPECTED massacre mastermind former Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr. was brought back to jail in Taguig City Friday afternoon from a military hospital in Quezon City after his doctors said he could be treated in detention, jail officials said.
The patriarch of the Ampatuan clan suspected in the worst mass murder in the country was discharged from the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center where he was taken on Tuesday for tests in connection with a viral skin disease he had contracted, herpes zoster.
Unlike his trip to the hospital which was made in his own high-end Lexus sport utility vehicle, the ride back to jail was in a hospital ambulance.
“We had a new strategy this time. We took a different route from the hospital to (Bicutan),” said jail officials who added the media was deliberately not informed about the transfer.
This after Justice Secretary Leila de Lima had assailed the use of Ampatuan’s SUV which she said had smacked of “special treatment.”
Chief Supt. Serafin Barreto, Bureau of JailManagement and Penology director in Metro Manila, told the INQUIRER in a phone interview that Ampatuan’s doctors had approved his discharge.
