Inspired start by Archers

UST Tigers also hammer out upset, trash UEWarriors

HOST LA SALLE staged an impressive opening ceremony. The youthful Green Archers showed they’re more spectacular on the court.

Simon Atkins sizzled early as the Green Archers blasted the favored University of the Philippines Maroons, 80-62, at the start of the 73rd UAAP men’s basketball competition yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum. Atkins unloaded four triples in the first half before finishing with a career-high 20 points to lead an aggressive stand by the Archers, who pulled away in the last quarter.

University of Santo Tomas also posted an opening-day victory by overpowering last year’s runner-up University of the East, 80-67, in the day’s second upset.

Defending champion Ateneo and tournament top seed Far Eastern clash today at 4 p.m. also at the Big Dome after the 2 o’clock contest between Adamson and National U.

“We caught UP flat,” said new La Salle coach Dindo Pumaren. “Bottom line is we played well and the aggressiveness was there. We’re a small team compared to the others. Our quickness is our asset and that’s what we used.”

Jeric Teng starred for the Tigers, dropping seven of his team-high 15 points in the fourth period while limiting UE star Paul Lee to just seven points.

“The first half wasn’t our game, but we worked as a team in the second,” said coach Pido Jarencio of his Tigers, whowere only ranked eighth in the preseason.

The Archers opened with a 6-0 run and stayed on top by foiling every UP rally led by highly touted FilAmrookie Mike Silungan and veteranWoody Co.

“I think we were tight in the first half, I didn’t see our team out there,” said UP coach Aboy Castro.
