Mario Parial revels in the ‘ Joy of Life’ in new exhibit
THE NAÏF WORKS of eminent painter and Thirteen Artists awardee Mario Parial have long been characterized by lively exuberance.
The fantasy worlds of color and life that he brings out in his paintings have made him one of the most soughtafter artists in the country.
His reputation as a maverick on the art scene has seen him creating works that are as lively today as when he started his practice in the 1960s.
Even when the distressing news of liver cancer hit the intrepid artist, Parial has continued to evolve his practice, his newer works becoming more contemporary, with quieter backgrounds. The University of Santo Tomas- trained Parial has refused to let sickness dampen his worldview. He continues to exercise his passion and joy for life.
This quiet celebration of life is a fascinating direction for the painter. His paintings, however, are still filled with subjects of joy
Parial finds new meaning in the familiar archetypes and motifs of his practice, such as the jester- musician; the flowerladen maiden; the blooms of summer; and the songs of angels. This celebration of enthusiasm and beauty— this call to joy—brings positivity and opti- mism to a Parial piece, and no doubt lends credence to his reputation as a top painter.
Galerie Raphael will be holding an exhibition of works in this direction, reveling in Parial’s joyfulness despite his sickness. “Joy of Life” is a survey of his naïf within the context of his new works. Opening on July 19 and on display until July 29 at Galerie Raphael in Serendra, the exhibit promises to be a wonderful entry point into the fascinating oeuvre of a celebrated artist.
