Kariton school launches high school program

- THE KARITON Klasrum has been adopted by the Department of Education in other parts of the country to encourage street children to return to school.

AFTER providing education to street children through Kariton Klasrum (K4) program, the young volunteers of Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) are now trying to reach more out-of-school youth through Kariton Open High School.

Supported by the Department of Education (DepEd) and Club 8586, another volunteer group, the Kariton Open High School program gives students the equivalent of Grade 7 education for free.

The DepEd provides volunteer licensed educators from private and public schools the teaching modules.

CNN Hero of the Year award recipient Efren Peñaflorida, one of the young leaders of DTC, teaches handling finances and entrepreneurship.

The DTC opened recently its headquarters, the Kariton Building in Cavite City, to the first Kariton Open High School students.

The 16 enrollees are composed mostly of former Kariton Klasrum students. At the Kariton Building, students have computers and the library.

DTC’s KB Manalaysay said, by monitoring K4 students, they found out that many of the children were still at high risk of dropping out of high school because of financial difficulties.

Peñaflorida said poverty should not be a hindrance to getting a proper education, especially for kids who were very interested to learn. The Kariton Open High School, he said, aimed to reduce the risk of students dropping out after grade school because their parents could not afford to pay for further schooling.
