Write a true war story and win a 64GB iPad
IF YOU are a high school student, submit a true story based on your interview with a World War II (WWII) veteran or survivor for a chance to win the top prize of 64GB Apple iPad in the IIE-PVB 2013 WWII True Stories Contest.
The second placer will be awarded an Acer Aspire laptop. The third prize winner will go home with a Samsung Galaxy Tab (16GB). Five consolation prize winners will each be given an Apple iPod Shuffle. All winners will also receive P5,000 each in Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) savings accounts.
Cosponsored by the PVB and INQUIRER in Education, the contest is open to Filipino high school students 13 to 18 years old who are asked to recover stories about the personal experiences of men and women who served during the second World War, as well as other individuals who lived through the conflict.
The endorsing teachermentors of the top three winners will also be awarded P5,000 each in PVB savings accounts.
Contestants must personally interview a WWII veteran or any person alive during WWII about his/her experiences during the war (request interview guidelines via e-mail to corpcomm@veteransbank.com.ph).
Entrants should write a narrative in English that tells, in 2,000 words or less, the interviewee’s story, including important details and quotes (request manuscript guidelines via e-mail to corpcomm@veteransbank.com.ph).
A student may submit only one entry. Manuscripts should be typed or computer-printed on plain white letter-size paper.
Each entry should be accompanied by a fully accomplished entry form (request via e-mail to corpcomm@veteransbank.com.ph) as cover page.
Each entry must consist of the following: The narrative manuscript with the fully accomplished entry form, interview recording on CD, signed releases by both the interviewee and the student, an endorsement from the student’s history or English teacher and a certification from the principal that the entrant is a full-fledged high school student of the school.
Only one student can win per school.
There should be no name or any other identifying information on any page other than the cover page.
Entries may be submitted to any PVB branch. Clearly mark the envelope “2013 WWII TRUE STORIES CONTEST” and include the following information: Student’s name, address and telephone number(s), school’s name and the PVB branch where it was submitted.

Deadline
Entries must be received by 4 p.m. of March 15. Entries received after this date will be disqualified. Neither PVB nor the Philippine Daily Inquirer may be held accountable for entries not received by March 15.
All entries will be verified by the Veterans Federation of the Philippines-Sons & Daughters Association Inc. (VFP-SDAI) district offices as to the authenticity of the name and military service or guerilla unit of the subject veteran.
The panel of judges, whose decision shall be final, will consist of representatives from PVB, VFP-SDAI, the INQUIRER, National Historical Institute and the University of the Philippines history department.
Winners will be chosen based on substance (content, originality, authenticity and compliance with guidelines) and form (clarity, proper use of language and presentation).
The judges may decide not to award any or all of the above prizes.
Winners will be announced on April 2 and shall be awarded on April 9, Araw ng Kagitingan.
The top three winning stories will be published in this section beginning April 16.
